To whom it may concern,

It has come to my attention in recent days that I might need to point this out –

This blog/podcast is both a personal journal and for entertainment. The views expressed within may or may not be those of the author. That is to say some things are very personal and real, and many other things are said purely for entertainment & exageration purposes. Case in point is the titles of some podcasts, that often don’t really relate to the content! ;-) [If my life was that factually exciting & drama-filled, I'd be on the front page of OK!, not podcasting.]

While it may seem this is common sense to anyone who has followed this blog (in its few postings), or listened to many long hours of rambling podcasts… it perhaps is not, and needs to be re-stated?! :-(

If you are unable to take anything I have written or said, with a grain of salt, then please sit back, take a deep breath, and switch to decaf.
On a serious note: At the same time, (as has happened a few times), please DO express any concerns or issues with me, in a post comment here online or via email. I am happy to reply.

Sumatra express

Holiday is going really well

after leaving Yogya, we flew on to Makassar and then got a little package tour up to Tana Toraja, near central Sulawesi.
Toraja area is amazing.
on day 1 we went to day #2 of a 5 day funeral. We got there just a bit too late to see the bullock being slaughtered, but in time to see the dozens of pigs being brought as ‘presents’. We also got to hear the poor wee piggies SQUEAL when they were stabbed. :-O
I can’t upload any photos here in this cafe, so you’ll just have to wait to see them later. – It was quite an experience!!!!
We also visited many graves, as the Torajans bury their dead in caves, cliff faces, or (once upon a time) babies were buried inside trees! I have soooo many cool photos. ;-)
It was also great to have a holiday with someone for a change(!)… Doug, Caity and I had lots of fun everywhere we went; sometimes at poor Doug’s expense. LOL

After Sulawesi Doug & Caity went to Bali to relax for a few days (they head home today), and I went to Pekanbaru to meet Ajir. We then got a bus (sadly, it was ‘economy class’) at around 5pm. Ajir tells me “only a few hours, we’ll be in Kubu by 11pm”. Famous last words… we got to the Kubu exit from the ‘highway’ at 2am, then waited 1 hour there for a mini-bus to take us to Kubu. In the end, we arrived at Ajir’s little shack at FIVE a.m.! :-(
Later that day, we checked in to a Losmen (hotel) in Kubu, where I had an actual bed. That night, after being so exhausted from the prior night’s trip, AND from being paraded around town as the exciting ‘bule’ (foreigner), we went to bed early. It was about an hour later that there was a knock on the door…
…Pak Polisi, open up! :-O
The local police chief had tracked me down, and was here to say he was not happy that I hadn’t reported to the police station. I wanted to say, “HELLO, this isn’t 1989 you know!”, but instead chose diplomacy and just agreed that yes, tourists should do that etc etc, and blah blah kiss-ass, so sorry sir etc… Then he bought us drinks and fried banana!
Next 2 days in Kubu were spent being dragged around by Ajir to meet any person he’d ever known there, or worked with. Schools, classes, students, etc.

Yesterday; 16 Feb 2010:
We were going to ride to Rumbio (on the west side of Sumatra). Kubu is on the east side, opposite Kuala Lumpur basically. So I ask Ajir how long it will take (cause I’ll be doubliing on the back of his little Honda motorbike!), “Only a few hours Scott, if we leave at 7am we’ll be there by 1 or 2 pm”. When I express great doubt at that (the roads here are utter crap, & it seems a long way on the map), he says, “I’ve driven to Rumbio 4 times before. It is not far.”
At 7am I buy a bike helmet, cost A$6. Yes, you read that right, SIX dollars. I had as much faith in that saving my life as a paper bag on my head, but anyway… zero options.
Before we can leave, we HAVE TO visit the Primary school (again), for photos with every class…. at 9am we leave.
- – to cut a loooooong story short, and to miss out the times I yelled at Ajir, and all the times I made him pull over cause my BUM was KILLING me!… we arrived at Rumbio at NINE p.m. ~ 12 hours later, and about 10 of those hours sitting on the back of a small motorbike. *ouch*

I better finish up. On the weekend I return to Jakarta for 2 nights, then home via Bali on Monday. :-)

Trip update 1 – Java

scottG’day
It’s 9:50pm Monday night here and I’m sending this while I still have
some Internet.

Trip has been good so far. Though, a bit rushed. We’ve had early
mornings every day, bar one!

Jakarta was good, and although rushed, got to meet up with ricky and jimmy.

Yogya started very badly with an awful night train from Jakarta
(arriving at 5am)! It only got worse as we were stuffed around by the
Ibis hotel. For one, they refused to believe that we’d pre-paid our
rooms & that rate incl breakfast. “Can u prove you paid? Did you check
your visa account statement?”
:-O

Yogya got off to a bad start, and as we only checked in at 12:30pm,
that day was wasted!
Today, we went to borobodur (Buddhist temple) and then to Prambanan Hindu shrines. They were both great. We took ajir’s old flatmate,
Bangkit, with us and his almost girlfriend ;-)

Tomorrow (Tues), we are on the 6 am flight to Makassar, Sulawesi. That means 4am breaky, and in a taxi quick smart to get to airport! Ugh.

We haven’t organised Sulawesi (tana Toraja) trip yet, so who knows
what will happen. I think we’re all sure that a night bus is out of
the question!!

Next weekend I’m off to Sumatra to visit Ajir. This may involve a 6hr
motorbike ride across Sumatra to see his family also!! My bum might
regret that decision.

Ciao. Gotta get to sleep!

Scotty.

Happy Australia Day!

“The tradition of noticing 26 January began early in the nineteenth century with Sydney almanacs referring to First Landing Day or Foundation Day. That was the day in 1788 Captain Arthur Phillip, commander of the First Fleet of eleven convict ships from Great Britain and the first governor of New South Wales, arrived at Sydney Cove. The raising of the Union Jack there symbolised British occupation of the eastern half of the continent claimed by Captain James Cook on 22 August in 1770.
Aboriginal Australians have continued to feel excluded from what has long been a British pioneering settler celebration, symbolised by the raising of the Union Jack and later the Australian flag which bears the British flag. Debate over the date and nature of Australia Day continues as the National Australia Day Council seeks to meet the challenge of making 26 January a day all Australians can accept and enjoy.”

(more history text/info by clicking here)

While today may well be the day that we ‘remember’ that the Brits invaded this land and started a long history of killing the black fellas, it is hopefully also a day of celebrating this nation as a whole; a nation full of all sorts of people.

Ignant Americans; KFC ad is not racist

I was going to turn this into a podcast, but thought it was too hard. :-(
So, have you heard the controversy over the Aussie KFC ad that has been labelled “racist” in America?

Watch the video below, and see what you think…

So there you have it. If you are watching the cricket (a game goes for 3-5 days!), and you’re stuck in the opposition crowd – get a bucket of KFC and everyone will be happy. “The KFC crowd pleaser”, right…? Simple enough?
well, not if you are American it seems. The land of the free (or should that be obsessed with division), equates everything to being racist. Chicken, black people = racist. Go figure! Honestly, this is what drives me mental. The constant need to make everything racist, to create division. Watch the clip below to see what these commentators have to say…

1) There is NO stereotype in Australia of black fellas and chicken.
2) the ad is featuring West Indies cricket fans, not Africaaaan Americaaans.
3) the white guy is not superior cause he’s sitting in the crowd; he is in the OPPOSITION supporters area.
4) if they knew anything about cricket, they’d know that the same thing is happening in the ‘Aussie area’ where the cheering, jumping, drunk, white yobbos are.
5) there have been KFC ads about NZ, Aussies, Poms (UK), Sth Africans, Indians and Pakistanis.
Y’all need to get an education, and pull your shelterred heads outta your own Yankee asses. Maybe catch a plane somewhere, OR, watch some TV/DVD on another country/culture. Outside of America, the whole world is not obsessed with creating division and labelling people/things to try to sound ‘PC’, but actually just creating more “difference”.

That’s my rant of 2010. Sadly, the people that read this blog are NOT the people that need to hear or think about it. Oh well. :-)
